Kona Brewing Company Makana Series

Kona Brewing Company Makana Series

Hawaiians love talking story. So when Kona wanted to highlight the good work being done to help their home thrive, we opened our ears to the mythology and history of the islands to tell the story of its modern-day heroes.

Inspired by Hawaii’s Aina, Kai, Wela, and Makani (that’s earth, sea, fire, and wind for mainlanders), we worked with limited budget to connect a single, iconic image with the island’s environment, using colors reminiscent of the four beers, four seasons, and four elements.

The result: A modular subrand for Kona Brewing Co., and a year-long program that’s raised over $10,000 for charity while engaging the media, trade, and locals in a lasting way. Beach and bay clean-ups, trail restoration, and reforestation projects have made Kona a new center for giving back, kicking back, and sharing their stories.

Magics Beach Grill

Magics Beach Grill

The best beaches stay with you, long after you leave. Kona’s Magic Sands Beach is beloved by locals as one of the best spots on the island to slow down, relax, and play in the Pacific. The sand here is ephemeral, disappearing on the tide for a few short weeks and then returning to create a pristine white sand beach you want to feel beneath your feet. Turning this experience and place into a brand identity for Magics Beach Grill was our challenge and sets the tone for the design, easy going and special at the same time.

We found inspiration in our favorite surf brands’ ability to capture the spirit of the beach, the lure of waves and the amazing places you find them both. Our aspiration was to help this new restaurant’s brand effortlessly match the experience you feel when connecting with the power of nature and the free spirit of those that surf. Can a restaurant’s identity and experience be like a surf brand? We thought yes, it can. Especially, because the owners and the chef are so deeply committed to utilizing Hawaiian grown and caught ingredients, plated up with such flair and creativity that you find yourself feeling awestruck.

The result: A hand-drawn symbol of the magic found on the big island, with images and typography that reflect the lifestyle and versatility of vibrant flavors and fresh ingredients from island farmers, producers, and fishermen

Kelly’s

Kelly’s

An origin story like Kelly’s Jelly is a gift in itself. Now a staple of farmers’ markets and specialty food stores, the brand started as a treasured holiday present for friends and family. To elevate its identity outside of Portland, we knew we’d need to preserve Kelly’s sweet history while showcasing a subtle, modern kick worthy of their pepper jelly.

Maintaining the feel of the simple, clean packaging Kelly started with, we looked to reflect the versatility of the premium, small-batch product as the perfect pop of flavor to cheese plates, sandwiches, entrees, desserts, even cocktails.

The result: A friendly logo, labels with bright pops of color representing the variety of flavors, and icons that illustrate taste pairings, organize recipes, and make it easy to add some life to your pantry.

Great brands connect with people first. To help SeQuential (Oregon’s first biodiesel maker) communicate their rapid expansion into oil collection, refining, and fuel stations, we knew we’d need to help them express what makes their business most unique to the vastly different audiences they’re serving—and how they’re everything big oil isn’t.

Inspired by real connection, SeQuential’s commitment to re-use, and bold re-thinking about where we all get our energy, we looked to create a symbol that was familiar, but also suggested another, better path.

The result: A clean logo that leaves the hippie image of biodiesel in the rearview and visually places SQ on the same plane as their multinational competitors, along with a brand system that helped each division of the company fall under a single brand, yet have their own identities.

Canteen Wine Co

Canteen Wine Co.

The right combo can make all the difference. For the childhood friends who co-founded Canteen (one with expertise in sales, the other in packaging) combining great wine with the great outdoors became their biggest adventure yet. To create the perfect vehicle for that journey, we knew we’d want to hit the road in style.

Playing off the sleek, aluminum packaging and laid-back nature of the Canteen brand, we found inspiration in vintage Airstream trailers we see while exploring the lush mountains, rugged coasts, and picturesque deserts of our home in the Pacific Northwest.

The result: A strong, playful logo with retro-camper detailing that feeds into a traditional canteen and represents exactly what the brand is about—having fun and always being ready for adventure.

Kona Brewers Festival

Kona Brewers Festival

Nothing brings people together like a party—especially one with good beer and a great cause. To turn Kona’s 25-year-old annual fundraiser for protecting the island’s fragile environment and local culture into a brand identity that could help cultivate sponsors all year long, we looked to place that’s as essential to Hawaii as the volcanic rock that built it.

Inspired by The Big Island’s flowing lava and the cultural reverence for the birth place of Hawaii, we couldn’t help but look to the volcano—as a symbol of the festival, a powerful sign of how precious life can be, and a lasting reminder of how the environment should always be respected.

The result: A bold symbol of life and energy unique to the Big Island. But the festival’s biggest success is that it’s been embraced by a community seeking to create connection, work together, protect their home—and have a little fun doing it.

Cedarville Vineyarad

Cedarville Vineyard

Cedarville Vineyard wines are hand-crafted by Jonathan Lachs and Susan Marks from their sustainably farmed estate vineyard in the Sierra Foothills of California. Both educated in enology at UC Davis, Susan and Jonathan’s dream of having their own Vineyard came into focus in the mid 90s when they found the perfect 20-acre property that would become Cedarville Vineyard.

From our first conversation with Susan and Johnathan, we quickly understood their passion for winemaking was not just rooted in the soil of the Sierra Mountains in California, but rooted in the story of their own vineyard and the surrounding foothills. From the organic practices in their terraced, hillside vineyard, to the underground cement caves they built below the winery, to the granite boulders and majestic groves of Oak trees bordering their property, every bottle of wine represents the land and the craft these winemakers apply to their wines.  To help express these attributes, we worked with woodblock artist, Jim Meyer, to depict different scenes from around the Cedarville Vineyard as the center piece of each label. Jim created 8-color reduction woodblock prints from our concept sketches and photographs.

The result: A wine brand that stands out on a very crowded shelf of California brands, and tells the story of the Sierra Foothills region, and the Cedarville Vineyard. There is an artistry to this brand, thanks in part to the special woodblock prints, that lets the buyer know that these wines are special and unique, full of character and nature.

¡Salud!

¡Salud!

A wine auction with a unique mission; bring health care to the hundreds of farm workers who help make world-class Oregon wines possible. This event was begun over 25 years ago by the winery owners to help care for their seasonal labor who bring some much care to their vineyards.

Inspired by winemakers and vineyard owners who know this labor force is critical to their business, the logo features a vineyard worker planting and tending to the vines and a toast to the mission of the organization, health.

The result: Raising nearly 1 million dollars each fall, ¡Salud! Pinot Noir Auction has a brand identity and event experience that engages their audience year after year. Color and small design elements keep the brand fresh with each auction year, while the major elements are recognized nationally and year around.

Portland Indie Wine Festival

Portland Indie Wine Festival

Flint co-created the Portland Indie Wine Festival in 2004 with Watershed Communications. The festival was built to be a marketing platform for small wineries with limited wine production to launch their brands. Wineries with less than a 2,500 case total production were invited to submit wines to the festival and blind judged for selection. It was the first wine festival to focus on emerging wineries in their early stages, but also based on the best quality of what was submitted.

Wines with soul had a distinctly modern and bold tone. We wanted to reflect this in the brand design, mostly typographic supported by color and photography that would stand out and reflect the special experience.

The result: An intimate experience for wine lovers with an opportunity to meet the winemakers, taste their wines (paired with great Portland food), and become part of small community within Oregon.
