Nancy’s Probiotic Foods

An Oregon Original Blazes the Trail
for Natural Foods and Probiotics

Nancy’s, the probiotics pioneer. In 1970, Chuck and Sue Kesey helped found the natural foods movement and were the first to introduce live probiotic cultures in their yogurt. Their scientific ingenuity continues to lead the health food market today.

A beloved regional brand in the Pacific Northwest, Nancy’s wanted to reach a national audience and turned to Flint in 2017 to help reposition their brand for growth. We created two distinct visual programs for their Organic and Conventional lines so that Nancy’s would appeal to a broad set of retailers and consumers. Our design strategy made a point of nurturing existing customer loyalty, never straying from Nancy’s Oregon roots and counter-cultural perspective.

For the past two decades and into the future, Flint continues to bolster and reinforce Nancy’s reputation as the original probiotic pioneer and leader in natural foods.

Square Mile Cider

Square Mile Cider

Sometimes the best inspiration is right in your backyard. To refresh a brand for Square Mile Cider, we looked no further than our shared home in the Pacific Northwest, a place known for its adventurous spirit and bearded pioneers—historic and modern alike.

Inspired by National and State Park signage and the rugged beauty that surrounds them, we set our compass toward a tactile, natural feel, with small details to bring an extra sense of Pacific Northwest personality.

The result: A bold logo, easy to read from down the trail, with a badge-like quality that effortlessly transcends a variety of media and greets the viewer with a sense that adventure awaits.

Stonemill Kitchens

Dip into a Delicious Redesign

As a premium brand in the Reser’s Fine Foods portfolio, Stonemill Kitchens was already perceived as high-quality in the dip and deli foods category. But Reser’s wanted to grow the brand and communicate “fresh and flavorful” to better align with their target consumers’ shifting values. In the midst of the “clean label” movement sweeping grocery store shelves, this was the perfect opportunity to re-formulate the product and re-design the package.

Developed by chefs for multiple occasions—dips, spreads, toppings—every aspect of our design was rooted in abundant ingredient imagery, lively accent colors, and confident typefaces; capturing the vibrancy of ingredients fresh from the garden.

The result is a line-up of joyful and sophisticated party dips that are easily distinguishable and emphasize fresh whole ingredients—a package and product that any aspiring foodie would be proud to put out on their table.

Résonance Vineyard

An Expressive Brand Design

Some years ago, Maison Louis Jadot, a well known and respected wine brand in Burgundy, France, began exploring Oregon as a place to make extraordinary wine. They sought a vineyard that embodied the character of Oregon through rich history and expressive soil, which they found in the hills outside of Carlton on a beautiful property planted over 30 years ago, called Résonance Vineyard.

We created a brand that expressed the deep emotional connection between the people and the place. Described as “somewhereness,” it is the culmination of influences–terroir, climate, viticulture, winemaking practices–that bring forth the full potential of the wine.

Starting with the brand name, we began looking at soundwaves for inspiration. While doing so, we saw within the waves the iconic fir trees that surround the vineyards of the Willamette Valley. Deep colors reflect the character and flavors of each vineyard’s terroir, and root the brand in a unique interpretation of place.

As the brand grew, we partnered with Résonance Wines to build out their direct-to-consumer program through a defined tier system that complements their single vineyard and estate wines.

A newly designed website gave Résonance an opportunity to connect with people far and wide, and invite them into the brand experience. We worked with local photographers to capture the essence of the brand and amplified direct-to-consumer sales opportunities throughout the site.

The result:  A comprehensive brand identity, from packaging to logo to website, that has an energy and elegance—combining the best of the old and new worlds into a distinct brand experience.

ElectrifyPDX

Lighting the Way for a Healthy Home & Planet

ElectrifyPDX provides renters and owners with resources, community, and recognition as they strive to create a healthier home and planet as a way to fight climate change.

They asked us to create a brand identity that would bring greater visibility to individual home improvement efforts throughout the Portland Metro area.

We wanted to design a sign that Portlander’s would feel proud to display in front of their homes. We drew inspiration from neon signs for the logo and overall design, because of its modern retro, yet timeless appeal of bold colors and simple geometric typography. We created whimsical icons and an approachable step-by-step program, based on the merit badge system, to educate and inspire Portlander’s to flip the switch from gas and fossil fuels to renewable electricity.

In the first three weeks after launch, ElectrifyPDX registered over two dozen members, their social media community saw steep growth, and there has been significant interest in the program from trade partners and community outreach programs.

WillaKenzie Estate

WillaKenzie Estate

Building a brand with legacy is one thing. Updating a brand that’s endured for decades is quite another. We’ve been fortunate enough to do both for WillaKenzie Estate; retaining the roots of our decades-old original design and re-imagining it for a new generation of wine buyers.

WillaKenzie’s method of gravity flow winemaking was once unique to the region, but after 25 years it was bound to inspire many followers. To evolve our design beyond giving a sense of looking up at the winery’s steep hillsides, we instead looked down to the differentiator beneath our feet.

The result: A sophisticated crest celebrating the two rivers that form the region’s unique soil, with premium brand and package design that exudes elegance consistent with the refined Pinot Noir inside.

Lindauer Chocolates & Confections

Lindauer Chocolates & Confections

Farm direct ingredients are elegantly hand-crafted into delicious french-inspired confections and chocolates. From brand logo to package to website, we strived to tell the story of the Lindauer family with three generations of growing French plums, walnuts and pistachios in the Sacramento River Valley.

Using color, icons, pattern and words, we helped stitch together how these ingredients come to life in Portland, Oregon in the hands of expert pastry chef, Madeline Thomset, working with the owner, Susan Lindauer. Their partnership is about honoring family and tradition in every delicious little bite.

The result: An elegant gift box of artisanal chocolates, complex with color and textures that are inspired by the confections inside.

Ponzi Vineyards

Ponzi Vineyards

Family heritage, a strong work ethic and an attention to detail, quality and nature has driven the Ponzi family for over 45 years. We first met them in 1986 and began helping them to establish the first Oregon wine brand to emerge in the luxury wine market world-wide. Our role in designing for the Ponzi’s has been to help them build their legacy, stay relevant and engage the next generation wine drinker with their beautiful products.

Dick and Nancy Ponzi came to Oregon in the mid 1960’s, planted their small vineyard and built a home, winery and wine press from hand. They raised three children in the wine business and two have taken the helm to run the company today as winemaker and general manager.  Their story, along with their Italian family heritage, are the roots of the brand identity.

The result: A brand that expresses family legacy and elegance and works to position the brand and one of the finest producers of Pinot noir in the World. By creating distinctive wine tier packages, reflecting a range of prices for different experiences and audiences, we increased sales for the company very quickly. The variety supports their direct sales program as well, giving loyal buyers something special as they get more engaged with the brand.   Most importantly though, the brand design supports an ongoing marketing strategy that has made the Ponzi Vineyards name synonymous with the best Oregon wines.

Adelsheim Vineyard

Adelsheim Vineyard

A wine label can only hold so much. To rebrand Adelsheim—the 40-year-old Willamette Valley institution—we knew we’d need a canvas much larger.

We dug into stories of how the family connected with the land and the people so critical to the process and tasted their exceptional wines which reflect this rich history and embrace state-of-the-art techniques. It was essential to focus on particular facets of the brand story; their northern Willamette Valley location, their family and friends who left an indelible mark, a single vineyard’s soil character or the winemaker’s art of selecting just the right blend to take something from ordinary to the extraordinary.

The result: The original hand-drawn images that illustrate the artistry of each wine, were freshly brought to the redesigned labels. The new wine tiers were developed to complement the artistic expression of the legacy wines. We refined the logotype and created a unique tier system to help sales bring something special to each buyer. These big and small design details emphasize the values of Adelsheim: people and place matter, leaving their signature on the wine.

Welsh Family Wines

Welsh Family Wines

Dan Welsh and Wendy Davis are committed to producing food friendly and expressive wine using low-intervention viticulture winery techniques. Sourcing their fruit from Oregon’s prestigious Willamette Valley, Welsh Family Wines is small-batch, local, and delicious.

This project is a personal endeavor, labor of love for Dan and Wendy. Their approach to winemaking is simple, letting the wines give what they will and reflect the place and vintage. We played off this confident and simple philosophy as the foundation of their brand design. We created an amplified logo, simple and modern in black and white and paired it with a vibrant color palette for separate variety labels. All set off with a subtle, yet complex pattern that is a graphic representation of hummingbird feathers (Dan’s favorite bird).

The result: A brand that feels classic, yet modern. Handcrafted, yet polished. Their launch has been a huge success, sales are growing and the line of wine varieties expand with each vintage.
